Plasma transport across Earth's magnetopause boundary, driven by solar wind interactions, is critical for space weather phenomena like magnetic storms and aurorae. A secondary process is necessary such as RayleighTaylor (R-T) instability or Kelvin-Helmholtz instability embedded in the primary KelvinHelmholtz vortices may play the ultimate role in making the plasma transport across the magnetopause. Although previous theoretic analyses have shown the possibility, yet the observational evidence for the instability has been absent for many decades.

This report presents the first in-situ observational evidence of secondary R-T instability embedded within K-H vortices at the magnetopause, alongside the first detection of primary R-T instability at the magnetopause under specific solar wind conditions.

报告人简介:

燕广庆,空间物理学博士,美国加州大学伯克利分校访问学者,曾任中国科学院国家空间科学科学中心副研究员,正高级工程师,中科星图维天信科技股份有限公司首席科学家、研究院院长,长期从事空间物理学前沿课题研究,在国内外权威期刊发表学术论文数十篇,多篇论文入选“科学金块”两点成果和封面文章,担任多家国际期刊审稿人,担任科普中国专家。在国际上首次观测到行星际磁场南向期间 Kelvin-Helmholtz 涡旋的规则结构,首次观测到嵌套在 Kelvin Helmholtz 涡旋中的 Rayleigh-Taylor 不稳定性,首次观测到磁层顶 Rayleigh-Taylor不稳定性过程。首次提出数字太阳的设想、应用场景和关键技术。
