Magnetic reconnection is a fundamental process in plasma, facilitating rapid release of the magnetic field energy into plasma kinetic energy. Reconnection plays a key role in the global dynamics of planetary magnetosphere and solar flares, while it is driven by the microscopic process taking place around the x-line. In order to understand the multi-scale process coupling between the kinetic (microscopic) and fluid (macroscopic) scales, the present study has developed a new plasma particle-in-cell (PIC) simulation model using the adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) technique. This talk will mainly focus on the simulation technique of how to implement the AMR on PIC. I will also show recent results of large-scale simulations of magnetic reconnection.
