IRIS observations have revealed numerous intense, compact and transient brightenings at typical transition region temperatures (around 100,000 K). These so-called UV bursts are characterized by chromospheric absorption lines superimposed on the greatly broadened transition region line profiles, and are believed to result from magnetic reconnection in the lower chromosphere or even the photosphere. Since their discovery, the UV bursts have received a lot of attention as they reveal significantly new insight into the physical process of magnetic reconnection in the partially ionized lower solar atmosphere. In this talk I will discuss about the magnetic field structures at UV bursts, and the connection of UV bursts to the well-known Ellerman bombs.
