Early observations of explosive phenomena such as Supernovae yield information that is not available at any other epochs, such as ejection velocities, metallicity of the progenitor, evidence of asphericity. I will discuss some of these applications in areas ranging from type Ia SNe, where exploiting the properties of the progenitor white dwarf is key to understanding the nature of the progenitor system and the reliability of these events as standard candles, to Gamma-ray Bursts and their associated SNe, where the true nature of the event and its kinetic energy can be best obtained using early data. I will suggest some opportunities to achive best use of this approach in the era of large surveys and robotic telescopes. I will also introduce the Liverpool 4 metre robotic telescope.
