The start of the 21st century witnesses a rapid expansion of large-scale surveys, accumulating data on millions to billions of astronomical objects. Such large data sets offer new opportunities for astronomical research, but present challenges both in terms of data analysis and complementary observations. In this presentation, I illustrate the case of large data set processing in the context of the Gaia mission with specific examples taken from the identification and analysis of variable objects, and of eclipsing binaries in particular. The Gaia spacecraft was launched by the European Space Agency at the end of 2013 and its second Data Release is planned for April 25th, 2018.
