CARMENES is an optical and infrared high-resolution spectrograph, mounted at the 3.5 m telescope of the Calar Alto observatory in Spain.The instrument carries out a survey, dedicated to the search of planets in the habitable zones around M-dwarf stars, which are the most abundant type of potential planet-host in the Galaxy. However, their red spectra often combined with high levels of activity make M dwarfs difficult targets for most radial velocity campaigns. I present the CARMENES survey and recent results regarding planets and stellar activity.
