Abstract:
A lot of variable gamma-ray sources, e.g. the Crab Nebula, relativistic jets, and Gamma-Ray Bursts, seem capable of efficiently accelerating particles to gamma-ray-emitting energies in very short time scales. We propose a new mechanism to account for the rapid acceleration and the gamma-ray variability, which we term as “magnetoluminescence”. In the highly magnetized outflow of the prime mover, ideal instability causes a tangled, high energy configuration to relax to a lower energy state over light crossing time scales; during the process extended E > B regions can be formed and sustained as the particles are accelerated against radiation reaction limit and act as an effect resistivity, removing the electromagnetic energy in the form of gamma-ray radiation. In this talk, I will present our preliminary results and discuss their implications.
