Abstract:
The study of stellar systems by numerical means has opened up many interesting avenues of research which are driven by the
rapid hardware development. For an astronomer, the challenge is to simulate the evolution of realistic star clusters over
significant times. Thus with a single PC and GPU card even small globular clusters are within reach of study. In this direct
approach, all the interactions are calculated consistently and close encounters are treated by special techniques. At the same
time, we employ synthetic stellar evolution based on model fits which describe the properties of the stars from the pre-mainsequence
to supernova and black hole stage. This stellar laboratory provides a rich field for analysis and comparison with observations.
On the dynamical side, there are also many opportunities for confronting theory. To illustrate the versatility of numerical simulations,
we discuss recent results of tidal disruptions by stellar-mass black holes which require high accuracy.
