Abstract:
Recently spectral features of fullerenes (C60 and C70) were identified
in infrared spectra by Spitzer Space Telescope of many astronomical objects,
including planetary nebulae, reflection nebulae around young stellar objects
and post-AGB objects. To date, fullerenes are the largest molecules proved
to exist in Space. Since properties of fullerenes are well known
from the laboratory measurements they can be used as a tool for
investigating physical conditions in environments where they exist.
In my talk I will describe circumstances which lead to the discovery
of fullerenes in Space and review their newest detections. I will highlight
some puzzling aspects of fullerenes formation in Space, which challenge
our understanding of the involved chemistry.
